“There it was. My first glimpse on the Eye of the Dragon. It is hypnotizing. That’s how we all started, didn’t we? The next thing you know, you’re hooked. You want to keep on doing it, even if you’re aching all over, even if you have to wake up just before the sun rises, even though it is as difficult as hell. Tears, blood, sweat, snot and salt water dripping down your face under the scorching Boracay sun (true story!), but you don’t stop paddling. “

I am an adrenaline junkie. An over-achiever when it comes to sports, adventure and everything exciting. I jump on cliffs. I surf, I swim, I go wakeboarding, scuba diving, kitesurfing, I do crossfit, I play Airsoft, Target Shooting, Archery and I also tried Boxing.

I had a boxing membership for Legacy Mixed Martial Arts Gym but it expired two weeks before I went travelling with my boyfriend, Thorsten. Each session at Legacy costs 500PhP. A month membership for a local is 3,000PhP. I didn’t want to pay 500PhP for each session and I also didn’t want to pay a full month if I’ll only have two weeks.

“Shall I go for per session?” “Shall I just pay for one month?” I pondered. “Shall I just skip training?” “Oh, but I want to train!”

Dilemma.
Then, I remembered. One of my girlfriends, Remedy, does Dragonboat paddling here in Boracay. I asked her about it on one Ladies’ Night when she refused to drink even a glass of cocktail as she has to go to training the next day. She said it’s free. Great! I can train for free before I go to China. I wasn’t prepared for the consequences.
“I only wanted to train.”

“I just thought it’d be nice to try.”

“It looks fun!”

There it was. My first glimpse on the Eye of the Dragon. It is hypnotizing. That’s how we all started, didn’t we? The next thing you know, you’re hooked. You want to keep on doing it, even if you’re aching all over, even if you have to wake up just before the sun rises, even though it is as difficult as hell. Tears, blood, sweat, snot and salt water dripping down your face under the scorching Boracay sun (true story!), but you don’t stop paddling. Otherwise, the Team Captain, the Coach or the Steersman will yell out your name in special mention as the deadweight that quit too soon. Can you handle being the one that dragged the Team down? No, right? So you suck it up, paddle and breathe every once in a while. You don’t stop until the Drummer calls out “Easy”.

Like I said earlier, I’m an adrenaline junkie and a huge sucker for adventure. I am not weak. But that did little preparation for Dragonboat. The Boracay Dragonforce/Dragonflies are Monster Paddlers. They are Rockstars! In the actual race, they are like Goblins. Small but very fast. I can hardly keep up!

Every Mondays to Fridays, we meet up at 6am, although, realistically, considering Filipino time (guilty as charged!); most of us arrive from 6:15am – 6:30am. We start out by running for 10-15 minutes usually in two lines (military style). If you see people running in two lines early in the morning in Boracay, that’s us (Do not hesitate to run with us! J). After running, we do some stretching and Calisthenics or Crossfit workouts. Then, we take the boat out to sea and start the boat training. We do a bending exercise and paddling warm-ups, 10 strokes with pauses in front and another 10 with pauses at the back plus three minutes straight paddling (that’s just the warm-up). After the warm up, we either paddle 5 minutes, 10 minutes or 15 minutes straight, in sets or do mock races against each other.

Our Team, The Boracay Dragonforce/Dragonflies means serious business. After all, the Team has been dominating the Annual Boracay International Dragonboat Festival. This year, we have been invited to race in the 2016 Taiwan International Dragon Boat Championships. Wish us luck!

So, what does it take to be a Dragonboat paddler, if you may ask? You don’t necessarily need to have a heart of a Lion or a strength of a Dragon. The most important thing is, Teamwork. No matter how good you are, how fast you are, if you are not in sync with your Team, your efforts are fruitless.
